A few ideas, to start it off:

    * Some sort of reflective triangle, or collapsible traffic cone: brightly colored and retroflective

    * First Aid Kit (one caveat on this: if you buy a made-up kit, have a look through it, make sure it's fairly complete, and you understand all the components. I'm in this boat: we got one, but I've yet to have a good look through it. Am thinking to just throw in a pack of regular bandages, for one.)

    * Wheel Chocks (In the Owner's Manual: supposed to be used on the tire kitty-corner to the flat when jacking. I've put some heavy duty ones in, but am thinking to look for an extra, light weight pair.)

    * A sturdy flat piece of wood, somewhere between 8" and 12" square (to stabilize and spread the load of the jack if you're on soft ground)

    * A couple of clean rags (Owners Manual suggests to wipe contact surface between wheel and hub when changing a tire, to avoid torquing the spare tire with some trapped grit in there. Why two: one for the real messes, one to finish)

    * Just my preference, but worthwhile I think: a compact trickle charger kit.

Some random stuff that comes in handy once in a while: Scissors, 4-In-1 Screwdriver, Rags, Zip-Ties, Extra Trash Bag(s), Gloves, Pencils (doesn't leak), Rope, Tie Downs, Bungee Cords

I keep the scissors there so it doesn't become a projectile in a collision.

I was thinking about jumper cables: maybe as long as you're the jumpee, not the jumper, ie: the Prius 12 volt is pretty dimunitive, might be overtaxed giving assist. I have a portable 12 volt source, toyed with the idea of putting that in there, but it's close to 20 lbs, and I start digging in my heels on the added load. Maybe in certain cirumstances.

The output of the inverter is better than what any conventional alternator can put out if needed. I would get "smart cables". Basically polarity independent and they have a delayed connect so no sparks at the batteries (or mating posts in the Prius). I have a pair, but I don't carry them. Only thing I carry with me is a set of Alpine chains that I thankfully have not had to use yet and a AAA membership card. :)

    In mine I have:
    - a thick blanket (mainly to avoid noise from all the other stuff that might move around when turning...)
    - triangle and first aid kit: both are compulsory in Germany (and most of EU)
    - 1.5L plastic bottle full of windshield wiper no-frost liquid
    - an elastic cable with hooks to fix stuff in the trunk by using the available rings
    - toilet paper (you never know...)
    - a foldable plastic box (handy when grocery shopping - you don't need plastic bags)
    - 2 foldable strong fabric bags (also handy when grocery shopping - no plastic bags needed)
    - 1 thermally insulated plastic bag (for stuff that need a refrigerator when grocery shopping.... ;))

We also have a blanket, well: that's our "trunk tray". Good protection for the carpet, keeps the pizza warm, can keep stuff from rolling around, might save your life in a blizzard.

Several people mention rope, string, bunjee cords. Good idea. I'm thinking a coil of twine and some box cutters or scissors.
