the clock battery on the motherboard went and I repaced it today. now I am getting a boot error: ide channel no 80 conductor cable connected , errors or no keyboard present sorry the first few words are missibg, the display goes beyond the monitor . I checked everything inside and nothing is loose .needless to say I am limited by only having a mouse . I know there are plenty of you computer geeks out there! thanks for you help
Seems to be saying that there's a keyboard error indicating that you have no keyboard. I've gotten this a few times with PS2 keyboards that don't seat properly in their plugs. Try unplugging the keyboard and plugging it again. If that doesn't work, then blow on it before plugging it in again. Human breath can fix anything!
thanks tony. I tried unplugging & replugging, total shut down, restart , even started with the keyboard unplugged, waited for xp to load, then plugged the keyboard in,hoping it would find it- all to no avail.....
IS it a PS2 keyboard? Is it USB? It could be a problem with the plug. Do you have another keyboard for testing purposes?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(TonyPSchaefer @ Jul 15 2006, 09:08 PM) </div> ps2, that is my plan b to buy a usb keyboard . unfortunately no alternative to try. it worked fine until I took the battery out & repaced it
That's too bad. I've felt that a motherboard should have two places for the battery in parallel, although only one would be in use at a time. That way you could replace a battery without having to remove the old one first. Hopefully you wouldn't lose information that way.
I'm starting to wonder is the Motherboard has some BIOS setting about the keyboard. If you have checked all the hardware, I can only think to check the software. Just to double-check, make sure there aren't any bent pins on the keyboard plug.
I work on computers all the time. I would unplug the pc from the power, remove the battery, find the clear cmos jumpers, jumper the pins, and hold the power button in for a min ( this makes sure to drain the remaining juice so the cmos can clear ) then move the jumper back over, plug everything back in and see what happens. You will have to setup your bios if it does not automatically set its self up. If you get the same error try a USB keyboard.
Make sure you are plugging it into the ps2 keyboard (purple) instead of the mouse port (green). Dennis
Thanks for all for your suggestions. took the easy way out and bought the usb keyboard. works well now. next problem- dead scanner.... just another of life's little aggravations....
