Having owned a 2005 prius and presently have a 2010 prius and a 2012 v, I am finally curious about the transmission and would love to set up a tachometer, even a temporary lashup, just to better understand how that continuous transmission functions. Being an old fart, the last tach I installed simply clipped on the post that fed the points, no doubt an anacronisim with these electronic ignitions. Any suggestions? great forum by the way.
Does the Scangauge show engine RPM's? (I don't own one and never used one but many on here have em' and will know for certain) I think it does, that'd probably be the best go to go for a Prius. Edit: Yeah, looks like it has RPM's:
I miss proper gauging too, but like Kermit always says.... "It ain't easy being green!" The Scanguage is a good bolt-on. You don't have the satisfying sweep of a proper analog or graphical gauge, but you can use the SG for a lot more things than observing RPMs. And.....it's only about as expensive as a bolt-on tachometer...
I have the Scanguage. I show RPM, engine temp, voltage and gallons per hour (I would have loved oil pressure, but it would have kept dropping to zero every time the engine shut off). the cool thing about the gauge is that the blue background is almost the same color as the dash gauges at night.
Here's two videos of a ScanGauge in action on my 2010 Prius (at 500% speed): [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Mi_PVInjjE]Prius - Work To Lake - YouTube[/ame] .
I miss the the proper tachometer too. the ScanGauge is nice but i do not want to stare at the small digits when driving. then i found this: 0.share.photo.xuite.net/myhamel/10837a2/5414913/208123297_x.jpg it is a hud display. you can find some on ebay and the price is not bad. i am going to give this hud thing a try.
