The structure of the project team also was upgraded from a committee system to a permanent project team with engineers selected from different departments to work together as an independent unit. Technical Administration Division's Uchiyamada was chosen to be the group leader. This choice surprised everyone, especially Uchiyamada himself. "I had heard that someone would take charge of the project, but I never expected myself to be the one," says Uchiyamada. The purpose of the new G21 was several steps ahead of the previous one, whose mission was to draw up a concept, and was very similar to that of a new car development project.
