just bought a used 2010 prius. just noticed that there does not seem to be any temp. guage(s) for the engines. is this correct? if not, where do i get them to come on? no mention of them in the manual. thanx.
There is not one. If it does overheat you will get a regular ol' warning light though, but overheating is not common in Prius.
There are quite a number of temperature readings available via the OBD2 diagnostic connection. Search for treads about ScanGauge and Torque.
The car knows what temperature it is at but it won't tell you unless you buy an aftermarket device. As Rob said, search for Scangauge and Torque. Scanguage is a device that allows you to read four OBD-II outputs at once and you can easily switch between dozens of outputs by programming your selections. Torque is an Android App that requires you to buy a Bluetooth dongle that plugs into your OBD-II port and sends a signal to you bluetooth equipped Android phone, tablet or other device. The Torque App is far more versatile and less expensive if you already have an Android device.
You need a piece of hardware in addition to the Torque APP. You need to get the dongle that plugs into the OBD-II port, low priced ones are usually an ELM327 device, not sure about the higher priced ones. It transmits the OBD-II data stream using Bluetooth and AFAIK, most any Android 2.0 or higher device with Bluetooth will work with it. Maybe even older versions of Android?? The dongles run from about $25 to $100. Many people do fine with the $25 eBay devices.
Spend the money on Torque especially if you already have an Android phone (maybe it works on iPhone now too, not sure). So many temperatures to track you'll have trouble figuring out which are important and which are not. There are two temperature sensors on the motor. I don't know how they relate to oil temperature. Other temperature sensors measure ambient air, engine intake air, engine coolant, catalyst (2), inverter temp (2), converter temp, inhaling air (HV battery), HV battery (3), and tires (TPMS equiped vehicles).
Thanks, Rob. My 2009 Civic Hybrid was similar. It had sensors for the intake air, coolant, and catalyst, but not for oil.
Most cars don't normally have an oil temperature sensor unless the car came from the factory with an oil temperature gauge.
