Many wonder if the 2011 Chevrolet Volt will live up to the hype when it finally goes on sale at the end of this year. The article needed an editor but there are pictures, too.
"Chevy engineers still anticipate that the Volt will drive on an electric charge, via a 120-volt household outlet, for 40 miles. If owners need to drive longer distances, the gasoline engine, which engages only when the charge is gone, and not when more power is needed, helps the Volt produce more electricity to travel up to 400 more miles on a full tank (eight gallons)." IMO, that 400 miles on 8 gallons is 50mpg. Toss in the 40 miles on electricity to goose the FE to 55mpg. Solid FE in line with a 2G or 3G Prius and with probably less interior room and a higher price. Chevy should be able to sell these by the tens of thousands.ound:
The fuel economy will depend heavily on driving habits - 40 miles on electric promises great economy for city commuters. Your math only works for someone consistently driving long distances (and for them, this isn't the right car).
why would someone pay more for a volt than a plug in prius? is electric cost going to be that much less than gas?
