How come with such a severe crash that the Onstar system in Tiger's Escalade didn't go off automatically?
That's a great question... I hadn't even thought to ask about it, as no one in the news media has even mentioned it. Granted, his neighbor called the police pretty quickly, so it's not like OnStar would have really been able to help in this scenario... but you think someone somewhere would have mentioned it, one way or the other.
Where is the source that says Wood's OnStar system failed? May be he has it turned ff so that his wife cannot track where his been.
I haven't seen anyone say its failed, bedrock... But the news media reporting on the accident pretty much went like this: "Woods was in an accident pulling out of his driveway. His wife used a golf club to smash the window and drag him out of the car. His neighbor called 911 and reported that Woods was on the ground and his wife over him. The police showed up a few minutes later." No where did they ever mention OnStar, something Tiger has helped sell in the past. It seems to me the media would report that his OnStar system reported an accident, and a neighbor called in and provided several details.
It would appear that the criteria to activate the system was not met. The airbags didn't go off, which is one known activator. It's also supposed to detect 'other serious crashes', but the exact variables and setpoints are not known.
OnStar's emergency communications system can be triggered in three ways: One is when the front airbags inflate on the vehicle, suggesting an accident serious enough for the driver to be incapacitated. At that point, OnStar operators are automatically called on the system's cellular phone, and an operator would try to talk to the driver over a speaker system. If there is no response, or the response confirms a serious accident, the OnStar operator -- who is able to pinpoint the vehicle's location within 25 feet thanks to GPS — contacts the appropriate agency, which sends help. The second way is via the Advanced Automatic Crash Notification system, which uses strategically placed sensors located around the vehicle. If OnStar was not notified, the crash damage did not affect a sensor, or the sensor reported that the damage wasn't severe enough to automatically notify operators. And finally, the OnStar operator can be summoned via a red emergency button inside the driver's compartment... OnStar key in Tiger Woods' crash? -- OrlandoSentinel.com
