PORTSMOUTH â€” Emergency responders were summoned to the junction of South and Middle streets Friday morning when a female motorist received minor injuries after her vehicle rolled over.

Portsmouth Fire Capt. Ken Smith said the driver of a Toyota Prius appeared to strike a large boulder near the road causing the vehicle to roll onto its side coming to rest partly in the road and partially in some shrubs in front of a home.

He said firefighters began to ready hydraulic tools to help extricate her, but noted the driver was able to climb out of a rear hatch in the vehicle.

Local police arrived to investigate the accident while public works employees responded to move the boulder from the road.

After stabilizing her neck and assisting the woman onto a stretcher, emergency responders transported her by ambulance to Portsmouth Regional Hospital. The wagon was towed from the scene and public works employees were called to move the boulder from the road and place it back onto a grassy island where it served as a barrier.
