Homepower's overview of true hybrids including Toyota Prius, Camry & Highlander; Honda Civic, Accord & Insight; Ford Escape - Mercury Mariner and Lexus RX 400h. Hybrids are a tiny step in the right direction providing a wedge into Detroit's inertia. Car buyers should be able to choose from as many as 30 to 40 hybrids by 2010 CE. http://www.homepower.com/files/featured/HP...pg28_Berman.pdf
That's pretty well written... with the exception of the YES/NO column in the chart. Generalizing "electric only" on that level is so wrong I don't even know where to begin. The three hybrid systems are so different, that info is extraordinarily misleading. I don't like it at all. Civic-Hybrid electric contribution & supply is so minor, it can barely even be detected... only a small amount for extremely short distances, and the engine is always in motion. Escape-Hybrid is the genuine, since the engine can remain at rest while an electric motor powers the wheels. But it only has a top speed up to 25 MPH, hardly realistic for any type of city cruising. Prius, as well as the other HSD vehicles, delivers a truly practical electric only. EV mode is up to 35 MPH. Stealth is up to 42 MPH. City & Suburb driving can favor electricity heavily.
