In response to Bwilson's comment below I have created a thread to see what the users here would prefer. So, if you would, please respond to the poll so we can get this ball rolling and make the changes needed. Thanks so much. "Top Prius C" Thread
Why is avg speed even important? Why the major discussion? Who cares how fast you were going. Getting on the list is impressive no matter how fast you were going.
Speed and number of cold-starts are primary determinants of Prius mileage. In a perfect world we would have both average speed and a count of cold-starts. But if we have the MPG, we can estimate the best case mph. But I am not hard on it. Bob Wilson
And at that point, it is an interesting thing to include if you're talking about mileage. Most believe the faster you go the lower mileage you get which is true to a certain degree.. It's cool to see the data each individual reports.. Not only this, but while you're taking the time to snap photos and record data to post on a public forum, is it really that difficult to add on speed while you're doing so?
Average speed is important because it must be high enough, say 35 mph, to show how good the skill in driving was in competent traffic speeds.. Speeds lower indicate poor competence in public driving and indicate the driver was a 'moving traffic pylon" and not a good citizen driver. Thats why I contend the true measure of economy is the average speed times the mpg. If you can't reach at least 3000 you haven't done much.
But why? Who cares if someone wants to drive around at 15 mph for over 500 miles. Their mileage isn't going to be good enough to get them on this list anyhow. Lower speeds doesn't mean they are slower than everyone else. Traffic jams cause low speeds.
I agree with this. I don't really think average speed is indicative of "the skill in driving was in competent traffic speeds." I think it's mostly indicative of the general environment the driver found themselves in over the course of that tank. My most recent tank for example included 140 miles on the interstate, and the average speed on the tank was still only 25MPH.. Maybe it's for the wrong reasons, but I think it should be included simply because the two stats do coincide with one another somewhat. Maybe in reality they have nothing to do with one another.
Don't get me wrong. If people can get it, great. But there are times when the fuel pumps are busy and I don't think it should be mandatory. I love stats of all kind, so I'll go out of my way to give everything I can... now that I realize I've had a few tanks that qualify. Couldn't see the stupid chart.
