bestcarweb.jp has a scoop about a small sports car being jointly developed by Toyota, Daihatsu, and Suzuki called Midship Sports. A 1L 3-cylinder turbo and a 5 hp motor. トヨタダイハツスズキで共同開発!? 1Lスポーツカーが期待大の予感 - 自動車情報誌「ベストカー」 Partial translation: "■ 1L class midship sports under development in collaboration with three companies Expected CG of Toyota brand model. This is a standard type, and a GR model will also appear from Toyota. Midship Sports, a collaboration between Toyota, Suzuki, and Daihatsu, makes the most of Suzuki's and Daihatsu's expertise in making small cars based on Toyota's TNGA knowledge. It is said that the platform will be newly developed for midship while making use of the front suspension of Yaris GA-B. Suzuki is in charge of engine development, and it is convincing that it will be a mild hybrid that combines a 5ps motor with improvements based on the K10C type 996cc, inline 3DOHC turbo installed in the Swift. And it is also epoch-making that each of the three companies wears an original design body by "DRESS-FORMATION" adopted by Daihatsu in Copen. The price is expected to be 2.2 million to 2.8 million yen. I can't wait for it to appear now!! ●New Midship Sports Expected specs ・Overall length: 4200mm ・Overall width: 1720mm ・Overall height: 1220mm ・Wheelbase: 2550mm ・ Vehicle weight: 1000kg ・Power unit: 1L, inline 3DOHC turbo + motor ・Maximum output/maximum torque: 120ps/20.0kgm ・Maximum motor output: 5ps Transmission: 6-speed MT/6-speed AT Estimated price: 2.2 million to 2.8 million yen" Other sites are seeing this as a possible MR2 remake. Rumor: Toyota and Suzuki Teaming Up on a Lightweight Sports Car Supposedly it'll be between $16,000 and $20,000, although I highly doubt it'll look like the above picture. No gas cap.
MR2? Or another small car we won't get? Considering the price of the GR86, kinda hard to see how they can target a lower price point.
It's a little bigger than the last MR2. A smidge smaller than the GR86. That car seems to start at 2.8 million yen in Japan. The Subaru boxer engine using Toyota's DS-4 injection costing more than the engine pulled from the Swift is likely a safe bet. No rear seat will also save some cash. In the Swift, the engine makes 111ps, and motor is 3ps. Could this be the mildest of the hybrids? There is also a 48 volt full hybrid available for the Swift in Japan.
