TOKYOâ€”Toyota Motor Corp. is aiming for record sales on a group-wide basis in 2012, expecting both the domestic and overseas markets to grow by double digits.

Toyota expects to sell 9.58 million vehicles globally, including those by its subsidiaries, Daihatsu Motor Co. and Hino Motors Ltd. That would be a rise of 21% from last year and would top the company's current record of 9.37 million in 2007.

The plan also means the company is gunning for the No. 1 spot globally, placing its bets on new, fuel-efficient models such as the Prius C compact hybrid. The company expects government subsidies for fuel-efficient cars to buoy domestic sales, and robust demand in emerging markets to pump up overseas growth.

Toyota expects domestic group sales to rise 30% in 2012 to 2.32 million and overseas sales to increase 18% to 7.26 million.

Last year, Toyota group sales fell 6% to 7.95 million, well short of the 9.03 million sold by industry leader General Motors Co.

Toyota's target for this year would surpass the all-time industry record of 9.55 million set by GM in 1978.
