Its presented for the technical interest, as this is the "Prius Technical Discussion" Forum. If you do not find it interesting, feel free to ignore it.
As far as I can tell this is just a paper showing how they made a mathematical model to simulate the actual behavior of the inverter during wide open throttle operation. I think this is more or less just for research and development use so they can simulate the behavior of an inverter as they develop new hybrid systems without actually having to create the inverter itself.
What Evan said, but specifically for heatsinking of the power transistors in the invertor. Usually designing the heatsink takes a lot of time - you have to calculate the requirements under all loads and conditions that will be seen. They've developed a technique to do this with a few equations. Pretty cool for us electronics geeks.
In simple, short terms: How hot the Inverter can get, when, and why. Mixed in with a little where, specifically it gets hot.
