The title pretty much sums it up. UK petrol/diesel use has dropped 20% in five years. BBC News - Petrol pump sales decrease over five years, says AA Not sure if it's because of the recession, more economical cars or the massive 40% price increase over the same period, but I find it interesting that our fuel use has dropped 20%! That's a significant amount. My money is on a bit of everything. In five years my household has changed to significantly more economical cars than before. I guess if everyone was doing similar when buying new, then inroads will be made. I do wonder how US petrol/diesel use has been in the last 5 years? Will it be up or down?

Keep in mind during this period, ethanol use has ramped up, so the reduction in dino gasoline is even more dramatic...I believe however there has been some growth in diesel since the farmers, for example, need diesel to grow the ethanol. International Energy Statistics Good source if you are curious about individual contries. You can change time periods, fuel, etc. World wide increases because of asian increases. US is down like the UK but not as much of a drop. SUVs peaked in 2004, the average car is now 11 years old, and the increased cafe standards are just starting to kick in, so the trend down in the US should continue or even accellerate.
