<_< I was unable to open the hood (bonnet for you UK-ers). The safety release latch was caught (0verlapped) by the the front edge of the radiator support plastic cover preventing the hood release.

The black plastic radiator support cover (panel just behind the front edge of the grill) is quite flexible. I had mistakenly pulled up on that plastic piece which caused it to overlap the release (see pics below) preventing the safety release from freeing the hood. I had to fashion a tool from a coat hanger to hook the plastic and pull it back forward of the release lever to open the hood.

Since the plastic is pretty flimsy, it's easy to catch it rather than the release. The point: Be sure you activate the relase and avoid putting your fingers under front edge of the plastic cover.
