I wish the Prius Plug-in had a larger EV range, but I understand Toyota probably fit as large of a battery as they could without changing the cargo space from the liftback (aside from losing the spare and some of the recessed cargo area). Also, the Prius c places its battery under the rear seat, which got me wondering: What is under the rear seat in a Prius Plug-in? Is this area unused and a potential location to increase battery capacity in a future Prius Plug-in or third-party additional battery?
I was just reading some literature for the PiP and noticed exactly what you just asked. In the literature it says:
Ahh, the 2010 demo Plug in Prius I had had a smaller tank as well and even on a road trip to Lancaster PA and back it really didn't mean anything. The car got better MPG then even my dads 2010 Prius. Even though it's being rated same or close to same mpg by the epa I still noticed a small increase in mileage in HV mode in the demo car, and I think John did too.
