So I picked up a 2010 with 208,000 miles on it last weekend. So far seems like it's OK, a few small items need work - slow wipers and the right front wheel bearing is making a lot of noise. The Blizzard Pearl paint is peeling, but the VIN is in the right range for a repaint. But I put my VIN in the system at Toyota.com and I found the following. The scary thing is, the previous owned has only driven 3,000 miles over the last year! It looks like the customer declined service on the wheel bearing (this is a puzzler for me, since I am very confident it's the RHS front wheel that is very loud). But does this mean that the customer declined the throttle body replacement, too? I guess the easy answer is look at the throttle body and see if it looks like it has 3,000 miles on it or 200,000. It looks like they got him for a throttle body that would have been about $25 at LKQ but he did get a new one from Toyota. Any declined the wheel bearing because it's probably a fortune I just did my whole car for what it will cost to do the one wheel at the Toyota dealer I'm sure and no I'm not paying $249 per bearing either That's absolutely ludicrous.
I took a look under the hood and, as best I can tell, it looks like the throttle body was replaced. The left rear hub looks really crusty - I'm pretty sure it hasn't been replaced. Five months earlier, on 6/2022, the car was in for dying in an intersection and they cleaned out the throttle body (and cleaned out the owner's wallet, lol). 1 6/2022 GENERAL REPAIR CAR STOPPED IN MIDDLE OF INTERSECTION AND WOULDNT RESTART. Anyway, here are a list of things about this car that make me go hmm... Only one key fob and it doesn't have the key cut Owner paid $$$ for throttle body replacement at dealer then hardly drove the car Has a set of snow tires although it came from Indianapolis (22" average annual snowfall) Has a bad right front wheel bearing, but Toyota thought the left rear was bad Ziebart rust protection, looks decent underneath and no body panel rust, except for areas of paint peeling. But the wheels are quite corroded.
Get a second fob quick before you lose the first one. The price for a new fob without one to duplicate is huge and sometimes goes bad requiring a dash out job. A mechanical key gets you into a locked car if the 12v goes dead. Otherwise you can’t jump it.
Probably but some dealers can only access the last ten years. If the door lock cylinder is original it may have the necessary code. By the way, searching here is not as good as a standard google search which might include the word Priuschat. Is getting a key cut from only the VIN number possible? | PriusChat
I replaced my right front wheel bearing. Much quieter now. No idea why Toyota wanted to do the left rear. Hope they did a better job diagnosing the no start than they did the wheel bearing.
He may have replaced the rear with an aftermarket himself or another shop. The rears are pretty easy with no live axle.
I don't think so, the hub of the left rear is really rusty. It's the crustiest of the hubs! I don't think it would get like that in 6 months and 3000 miles.
For what it's worth, I went with a Mevotech Supreme hub. It was made in Thailand. I've had decent success with Mevotech Supreme, but I know some people bash them.
