UNUSED SPACE for DOUGHNUT

Discussion in 'Gen 1 Prius Plug-in 2012-2015' started by Andyprius # 1, Jul 30, 2012.

  1. It just occured to me that there is empty storage space for the spare tire on the PIP. IN fact I had actually attempted to use the trunk cover as a shelf on my 2005 and ended up distorting it. I think I will do it deliberately this time with adequate support. My plan is to make a template approximately the same size as the cover, lay it on top, drill 2-3 holes for bolts thru either some sort of fiber board or wood, set spare on wood ,align holes and fasten using proper length bolts . Bolts should be captive, using additional nuts. The forward support edge should be no problem, the rearward edge must be precise if those two plastic pieces are to support the board. Next tricky portion is cutting to size so that board by itself can be easily handled. I have measured the thickness of the doughnut roughly with my curled hand and the tire height should be lower than the rear seat headrest (whiplash protectors). Mounted with the hollow up provides more storage space. There should still be additional storage space to the sides of the spare for small items, like shoes. Since the walls of the car edge in, it should not go any place and be reasonably secure. What do you think? N O T E : I plan to still maintain original configuration of cover w/o distortion or marking .

what empty storage space? You mean where the charging cable goes? Pic's plz

  3. There is a thin plastic piece which pulls out to hide the contents of the trunk. All the space above that horizontal line is conceivable and usable space.

  4. Just a conception, no pictures.

The spare needs to be securely fastened to prevent it from becoming airborne should an accident occur. I have mine strapped down in the cargo area, out of sight when the cover is closed. If I understand what you are describing, it seems as though it would block your vision to the rear.

  6. True, but not entirely, since having the back-up camera I don't look out my rear window as much.

  7. Everything really hinges on clearances between tire and rear glass.

  8. All this was total conjecture, when I got home I measured clearances and it will not work.

maybe we can shove the spare tire down the compartment that is for the charging cable;)

  11. Just have to face facts! I did shove the doughnut into the space for the cable, with such a force that I forced the plastic bottom clean off, now my doughnut is venTilated!
