Yep, the poles might be melting and California might be burning but if you had been a glass snake (Eastern Glass Lizard...legless) your most pressing problem would have been the black snake (Northern Black Racer) latched to your middle. My Aunt and Uncle are visiting and my Uncle noticed something flopping around in a grassy area in my Dad's garden. It was a black snake that had caught a glass snake. My Uncle watched a bit and then remembered they had just bought a new video camera. So, they caught the last few minutes of the battle on video. Just a home movie reminder of the little life and death struggles that surround us all the time. If you wish to view the video go to Picture_of_the_Week .
Okay. It required yet another plug in. Only allows manual download. I downloaded and installed. I refreshed the page. Still required me to download the plug in. I went to Firefox add ons. Nothing applicable. I didn't want to see a snake eat a lizard that much anyway.
Actually, this is just one of those FireFox unfriendly things. If you copy the URL and use IE it works OK. :ranger:
At the meseum I worked at years ago we used to feed baby copperheads to the king snakes. Reptillian spagetti!
In the video my Dad talks about the time after heard something thrashing around in one of his pecan trees. About that time a "chicken snake" fell to the ground wrapped around a young gray squirrel. The "chicken snake" is actually a rat snake which is a constrictor. He found the pictures he took. Here they are:
Yesterday, I was out back checking an oil leak on my tractor. I happened to look to my left and about 10 feet from me was another northern black racer trying to eat a baby common snapping turtle. The trouble was that the snake just couldn't get its mouth around the turtles carapace. I drove the snake away and put the little turtle in my dragonfly pond.
