I am just curious what kind of real world gas mileage you plug in users are getting with plugging in at night vs. without plugging in at night? What about long highway trips at let say 75mph cruise?
People are reporting slightly better mileage on long trips and when not plug charged, than a regular prius. That said, Its not worth the price premium over a regular prius, if you don't plan on charging it. Unless, maybe, it gets you Express lane stickers or something. At 75 MPH, with no charge, you are looking at 50 MPG, maybe. I plug in every chance I get and try not to exceed 60-65. My last tank was 91 MPG. On a 540 mile trip back home from purchase, with only the departure charge, driving 65 MPH, I got 59 MPG.
It does sound like a few mpg better, but not really that much without hte plug in. I am talking more about normal driving, not trying to archieve high MPG
What mileage do you get in your current Prius? , that is what you can expect in a PiP if you don't plug in. If you don't plug it in, it's just a normal Prius, but heavier. Anything above that is coming from better regen capability, and putting it to use later. I thought I was driving normal. I just Plug in and try not to exceed 65 MPH. What is normal driving? Jackrabbit starts, accelerating toward stoplights, 75-80 MPH tailgating in the far left lane of the interstate, maximum braking at the last min for stops and turns?
Check out this thread http://priuschat.com/forums/toyota-prius-plug-in/106610-pip-mpg-spreadsheet.html And the spreadhseet it points to..
Per that spreadsheet, EV miles are averaging 147 MPGe while gas miles are at 53 MPG. The composite of both is at 67 MPGe. Keep in mind it is not a year round data. We still have summer (more A/C) and winter (more heater) coming up.
I agree with the above figures. I drove the PiP from LA to Las Vegas with 4 people and associated luggage at 75 MPH using cruise and got 53 MPG. A more typical tankful with a mix of city and freeway - I get mid 60's... depending on how many times we charge the car (sometimes more than once per day).
Still on my first tank of gas from the dealer. Picked up the car on the 28th. At about 500 miles now with half a tank left. Getting 98 mpg. Charge often.
I'm getting around 75mpg on a 110+ mile (round-trip) commute, half highway half in-town, charging at each end. I try to reserve the EV portion of the drive for the in-town section. Without charging I get about 55-65mpg depending on how fast I drive. The lowest I've seen was 47 on a very short high-speed highway trip. Short in-town trips are regularly all-electric. These are estimates based on tank level and the reports on the display after each trip. I haven't actually put gas in the car yet, and I've had it for a week. Pushing 500 miles on the tank, and just got down to three pips left on the tank meter (out of 10.)
I bought my car in LA and drove it 400 miles to SF. It was 1/3 charged, but the effect of 5 electric miles in 400 is irrelevant. Of course, I babied the brand new car, but the mileage I got was an actual 53 MPG. If you drive it ordinarily, mileage is the same or slightly better than an ordinary Prius. But if you drive short, electric distances, it's much higher mileage. If you drive longer distances and use hypermiling techniques, the very large battery can extend mileage dramatically. I had a full tank go 623 miles and 8 gallons, for 75 MPG actual. Pretty impressive possibilities. Anyway, if you don't want to (or can't) charge it, the mileage will not be better than a standard Prius, unless you drive to maximize mileage. If your driving is all long stretches on the freeway at 75 MPH, you'll see about zero benefit over a standard Prius. Hope that answers your question.
