My wife and I have had our Prius for 8 days and are absolutly loving it. I've read a lot here on PriusChat and am probably going to increase the tire pressure to 40/38 (Maybe even 42/40 if she doesn't notice and complain about the stiffer ride. It is "her" car.) I've read that the TPMS will turn on the idiot light if the pressure drops 25%, and I assume that there is a warning when the tire pressure is "too high." When I increase the pressure, can I expect the light to go on? Also, can the TPMS be "fooled"? Example: I increase the pressure to say 50 psi, reset the system, and then lower the pressure to 42/40. I assume this would allow me to get a warning when the pressure drops to 37.5psi.
Actually there is a way to reset the system, but I don't remember how (I've never done it, but the dealer showed us how at their new owner reception). I do recall that he said you put set the tires to the psi you want and then reset it at that pressure, and you should not get any warning lights at that new desired pressure. I'm sure someone here knows what button to press to reset it. If not, ask someone in the dealer's service department (if no one seems to know, ask to talk to one of the hybrid certified mechanics).

Welcome to PriusChat, GreenJohnny. Congratulations on her new car... Galaxee's reference is the right one. You can fool the TPMS, but only on the down side, if you want less than a 25% drop warning. Say you know what PSI you want the warning at: over inflate by 33% (33% up = 25% down), reset the TPMS switch under the steering column, then deflate to the pressure you want to run at. The TPMS alarm will light when pressure drops to the lower limit you chose.
I have had mine set on 40/38 for the last few months, no light has ever gone on because of it. It did go on when the psi was 30 in one tire, but that was because I had a nail in it, a slow leak.
Thanks for the responses. I had already read Galaxee's excelent post on the TPMS, and I'd read how to reset the system in the owner's manual. (I know I'm a geek, but I read the whole OM the night we brought the car home. It just seems logical to me to reset the system after inflating the tires to a value that will activate the warning light when I want it to. Then I'll lower the pressure my "normal" level. This way, I'll know a tire pressure is lower than I'd like it to be, without it being 25% lower. I don't want to end up driving for a few weeks on a tire that's down to 31 psi after setting the TPMS at 40.
That Galaxee link is really great! I think my 2000 Sienna tire pressure monitoring worked off the abs system, if so, this one is certainly more complicated!
