Hi! I am ready for a newer model Prius. My current Prius has 170,000 miles and still runs well. Should I just hang onto her or start looking for a newer pre-owned model? Thsnks for your advice! Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
you're headed for a decline in reliability. while many do well with 200,000+, if you're ready for a new model, why not go for it? your car still has room good value, and will make a high mileage driver very happy.
I agree with @bisco. Since it's in good shape, you'll get more for it than if you wait till something breaks. So, if you want a newer one and can afford it, this might be a good time. On the other hand, some of us like to drive the wheels off them, so it's pretty much a personal preference.
I'd keep her until repairs cost more than the car is worth or reliability becomes an issue. There may be another 50000 trouble free miles left in her. The longer you keep the car, the less you pay overall for cars.
If car hasn't given you any problems and if you dont commute far on regular basis or travel far in general, drive it into the ground or til wheels falls off. Long as it doesn't leave you stranded far from home because of a minor break down can be costly if need to be towed. Reasons to sell it, getting bad MPGs and expensive part that's almost half value of car is needed, constant breakdowns, HV battery showing signs of crapping out.
Interesting thread. I recently received a letter from my local Toyota Dealer asking "if I may have an opportunity to purchase your vehicle. Due to the current situation, the value of your 2009 Toyota Prius has increased dramatically in the short term." They go on to explain that due to flood damage caused by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, there is a shortage of vehicles available for auctions and dealerships. They include a newspaper cutting, and go on to state "I would like to make you an offer to buy your vehicle immediately. A physical evaluation blah blah blah etc. etc." Well, children, what should Old Father William do?
Great minds think alike! That very thought was whistling through the canyons of this old mind! Thanks @bisco !
Hurricane or no hurricane, I'm routinely getting mailings from the local dealer telling me how, for one reason or another, the demand for my current Prius is super high and the dealership really wants to offer me a great deal on it. Often there is a yellow sticky on the front page printed with what looks like a handwritten note from the manager. -Chap
When the dealer near us pulled this stunt a couple of years back, I took our 2010 with 129 k miles at the time in for their "inspection". When they took it for a short drive, the salesman that was helping me said "wow can't believe it only has 12 k miles on it. How about $12 k to trade it in?". Too bad we weren't in the market at the time and I only wanted the free oil change that came with the hassle of spending time there. Maybe next time.
My Prius has 91,000 miles on it. It has one problem: it burns oil. You can believe that I'm not far from trading it in -- and there's no guarantee I'll buy a new Toyota with it.
