I cracked my windshield (chip on 880N near Oakland High street). It was a small sideways chip on the passenger edge (1/3rd the way up from the bottom of windshield). In less than 30 minutes, the crack had progressed halfway towards the center of the windshield (towards driver side). This hurts. Anybody know whether I should go OEM or aftermarket for the replacement. Also, any good "Auto Glass" shops in the Fremont/Hayward area ? Thanks,
There is a Safelite Auto Glass Shop in Union City if that will help you. I haven't had any work done by them but I guess they are a reputable chain. You have a nearly new car. I would probably try to get an OEM windshield but don't take my opinion. Get some more opinions.
I'm glad that I'm in South Carolina. We are a complete coverage no deductible comprehensive insurance state, when it comes to automobile glass, even if the standard deducible is $500 or $1,000.
If your travels take you as far as Reno, Brite Glass is very very good. OEM or replacement glass, your choice.
If you have a new car, you likely have "full coverage" insurance. Give them a call. You might be VERY happy that you did.
To answer the OP's question, yes, the Prius windshield cracks easily. It is a relatively large windshield due to the steep angle. Introduce a small crack or chip, throw in some vibration, and the crack grows larger very easily. I try to avoid following large trucks/vehicles that can easily throw rocks/stones from their tires, or drop the same from their loads. SCH-I535
i haven't had a crack or a chip in 10 years, but the speed i drive, there is never anyone in front of me. saves gas too!
You have just tempted fate! I got a chip in my Prius glass a year ago from a big stone that was thrown up by a truck coming towards me. I could see the stone bounce before hitting me. I ducked, CRACK, and the damage was done. Free repair from my insurers as it wasn't that large.
About 3 years ago, Safelite came to our house and put new windshield in 2006 Prius. Did a great job in a little over an hour.
