I had a short(?) that took out most of the function in my graphic window as well as all function for my stereo/radio (2001). The only hint of trouble was intermittent static from the left speaker. Though I wasn't around for the fireworks, there was apparently a small puff of smoke from the right side of the dash as the stereo winked out. I believe it might be a relay/module behind the glove box but can't seem to dig up a proper diagram. Anyone out there recognize this symptom? I'll be hitting 250K in about a month...
$15 at techinfo.toyota.com will give you a couple days' access which should be more than enough to download the proper diagram (or the whole wiring diagram manual, which is very useful) and at least volume 1 of the service manual with all the diagnostic procedures. I don't believe there's any module behind the glove box (unless something aftermarket) that would be involved in the symptoms you've described. Probably that was just the magic smoke escaping from the radio or MFD and happening to drift out the right side of the dash, but tracking it down systematically will be the best way to find out. -Chap
So, the part of my post that you turned into "..." was "that would be involved in the symptoms you described." It didn't seem like steering ECU or ECM was the answer to any question the OP was asking. -Chap
I thought he was describing a 'short'. The engine ECU is unlikely but the power steering handless some significant currents. If his steering ECU had already failed so he was used to driving it 'manual', having the steering ECU short could easily be an impressive short. But I think the right approach is to recommend the OP either buy the paper manuals, often available on eBay or the online service. At least then he'd have a map of what is where. Bob Wilson
