2010 Prius with 235k miles on it. Likely 2nd or 3rd engine already and never ever cleaned the EGR system. Lo and Behold..another head gasket and time for a new engine (again). You will never see a more dirty EGR cooler and valve in your lifetime. The plunger was completely stuck like concrete and had ZERO flow through that cooler. With all the info online, I can't believe people still let this happen. I feel like eating oreo cookies now.

It's so incredibly shameful that Toyota Stealerships refuse to clean the Gen3 EGR system as regular maintenance just because Toyota doesn't recommend it in their maintenance schedule. It's like the blind leading the blind... Can you imagine being a "certified" Toyota tech and ignoring a fouled EGR system on a Toyota engine that blows headgasket because it runs too hot? Almost as stupid as all the Toyota techs claiming a Gen3 used Toyota for sale is in great condition with no issues, "just a little low on coolant." Lol

I’m sure most people don’t research car maintenance online, which dealers will be giving thanks for this Thursday

They did issue a warranty extension, but couldn’t resist lying through their teeth with this stinker:

While the majority of vehicles will not experience this condition

    ^ Italicized and underlined thus.

OP’s pic likely used auto-exposure, which unfortunately stops down to accomodate the shiny steel flange. I’ve tried to boost it a little:

When it comes to the training of Toyota Techs who work at stealerships, as long as there's no error code there's nothing wrong with the vehicle because "known problems" with specific vehicles is not their responsibility. As far as they're concerned, known problems is a term in the computer world, not the auto repair world. Most all of the used Gen3 with early stages of head gasket failure that are being sold right now are certified to be mechanically sound by these stealerships. And out on the west coast that can mean dropping $14K on a Gen3 car that you'll find out has a head gasket failure in the months ahead. That alot of money to get scammed for by Toyota Stealerships.

They "forgot" to fully complete this stinker: While the majority of vehicles will not experience this condition within this extended warranty period...

They reliably choke up with carbon, about 25% per 50k miles. I’d suspect the rate accelerates too, as the build-up accumulates.

It accelerates exponentially when a car is burning oil..

It reads like the stealerships won't even bother to address until there's a specific error code...

Do you think what you're sharing applies to all North American Gen3 or maybe specific to Canada?

There should be a comparable US thing I would think. My letter was dated May, 2017.

Yeah, it skirts the core issue, that the 3rd Gen EGR system was not properly tested, is not up to the task. I think it's very telling, one 4th gen blurb was touting the "revised EGR system".
