Replaced the wife’s DD (93 Land Cruiser FZJ80) with a silver package #2 today. 13 MPG to estimated 44.....I am not TOO excited about that........ 90 some miles and I am nearing the 40 mpg mark. I am grateful for this site and for much of the good info within. I hope to be able to offer positive contribution as well.
Welcome aboard! Remember to have fun, not worry about MPG. Even in the winter time, other vehicles will get worse-than-usual MPG's, the Prius is no different. Block heater, and front grill blocking, will help. If you drive one-way less than 5 miles, then stop for a few hours, you can expect a 40 to 42 MPG. Don't worry about it. Drive normally, learn first to let go of the gas to coast to a Stop or Red Light, from Much Much Farther than a conventional car. Once you master than, you learn to get to cruising speed, then let go of the gas, then a second later, press slightly down. You can either be All Yellow (pure electric) or no arrows at all (glide). Don't try to outsmart the car, and learn to coast, will make a difference. Then you learn to glide/EV for extra "free" miles to better your average. Being in Maine, don't expect to get above 50 MPG, unless : - summer - never going faster than 50 MPH - very few stops Just pay the car, then upgrade to cheap EV-10 or better, when gas will be higher than 5$/gal. Battery tech will be cheaper due to mass producing.
Welcome to PriusChat, 80me! This is such a great car and you can learn so much here. Your MPG will improve as you learn how the car works and how your driving style affects it, and as it breaks in. Look in the Knowledge Base forum for many tips on improving milage. And remember to enjoy the ride!
A rather useful thing to know is that when you release the accelerator, the motors actually begin to regenerate, slowing the car down and wasting energy. When you want to coast, hold the accelerator down just enough that all the arrows on the display disappear and you will free fall. Popping it into neutral will achieve the same thing, albeit less smoothly.
You are required by the Sacred Secret Society of Prius Owners to post a picture of your new car. Even though you think they all look alike, except for colors or wheels, by your car we shall know thee.
