I'm an idiot. I spent nearly the first 2000 miles charging up to 80 mph, rolling down to 50 mph and repeating - under the guise of investigating "pulse and glide". Driving smoothly gave 10% better economy. Anyway, I thought it a good idea now to ask for best car mods, equipment or driving advice to maximise mpg, specifically for a gen 4 Prius. I've been trying to drive diesels for best mileage results for 10 years, and I'm on Fuelly (so I'm not a complete moron), but I am new to Hybrids. I'd rather nip bad habits in the bud now than have them sapping my economy for a decade....
Well… 1) I totally agree with your 1st sentence. 2) I'm thankful I don't have to pay your garage bills. 3) Please don't ever ask me to lend you my car. 4) Good luck with the rest of your life.
for back roads, accelerate smartly to slightly above speed limit, then back off the pedal until the engine shuts down. feather the pedal until the hsi bar is just to the right of regen until you're slightly below speed limit. this is called pulse and glide. keep repeating the process, but only if you aren't hindering people behind you. coast as much as possible to stops. when making multiple short trips, go to the farthest to warm the engine, then work your way back home. the best you can do on the motorway is drive as slow as safely possible.
Ha ha! I had covered about 1,000 miles before hitting 70-80 mph. It was an article on Fuelly about mpg marathons and pulse and glide that said up to 70+ and back down to 50mph (repeat) was the best. I have since opted for closer to your model, bisco, and will investigate further. I do find myself with an eye on the rearview, ready to speed up if I see a fast approaching car. Thanks will 1. That's why I said it 2. Toyota pay my garage bills 3. Unlikely because: a I have a 2nd car b I'm not keen on older Priuses c I'm banned from America 4. Nice 1 - we could all do with some extra luck!
