Just now I tried to watch a video on YouTube, and there was no audio. I tried another, that I've watched before, and there was no audio. After rebooting the computer and getting the same result, and finding out that both iTunes and Vimeo audio worked just fine, I went back to YouTube and realized that it was set to zero audio volume. I slid the slider, and the audio worked fine. So I went to another YouTube video, and it, too, was set on mute. I had to slide the slider. What's going on? Somehow, the default audio is set to mute. I looked around and could not find a way to set the default to audio-on. I've never had this problem with YouTube before. Is there a setting for that on the YouTube site? My computer's audio is not muted. Just the YouTube videos.
I think the NSA is gaslighting us all. I was getting no sound on a tv show running through cable/tivo but everything was fine when I used an hdmi connection to my computer. It turned out to be just one channel on the tv, but I shut stuff off/on and swapped various cables before it occurred to me to just change the channel and see...
I've noticed the same thing. I had to check my speakers before I noticed the slider automatically set to mute. Weird.
It's just big brother saying no Or Carnivore (nsa's internet control) getting an update, I'd prefer 1984
YouTube site cookie on your computer saves the last state used. Change it to full volume on the last video you watch. It should return to that full volume state when the computer is booted back up.
Nope. I cleared the last week of cookies and it's still doing the same thing. BTW, I tried to find a list of cookies so I could just clear all the YouTube cookies, and I could not find it (Chrome). All I could find was clear all cookies according to date (or all, which I didn't want to do... though even just clearing the last week's cookies I had to log in to Pruis Chat and Accuweather again, though Yahoo did not require logging in again.) I hate having to mess with cookies because it always screws things up.
Were you still logged in at YouTube? They might also store your user settings unless you view in a logged off mode.
If I'd been logged in, then it should have stored the new setting (volume on) immediately. I tried closing the browser and returning, and it didn't help. But later on yesterday it was working properly. I think it was a bug in the web site and they fixed it.
The YouTube bug I usually get is that there's no audio for the first 8-10 seconds or so, even though the volume is up on my computer and the toggle in the player is up at full. Its like it is doing everything to cache the video part far enough and is ignoring the audio until things catch up. Anyone else get that happening?
Yes DavidA I get the same thing regularly. My volume is up...YTube audio slider is up...just no audio. It never catches up just no audio. I poke around on Youtube till I find one video that will play audio and then I'm ok. Happens alot. Weird. Suspect browser. Have not tried it with another browser. I use Firefox.
^ I've never had that problem. And the problem I reported in my first post has not recurred. I use Chrome on an old iMac. OS X 10.6.8, since my computer won't run anything later.
