I just bought an '05 Prius. It has the standard key option. I'd really like to upgrade to the smart key - does anyone know of an aftermarket kit for this? Or if I can buy a module and matching keys on the used market?

Also, I'm going to convert my Prius to PHEV (see: YAPiP - recreating pEEf's approach | PriusChat) - so if you know of any technical resources on the smart key system I'd love to hear about them (maybe I'll make my own smart key if I can figure out how the existing system works).

    Thanks!

Anything is possible, given enough time and money. However, practically speaking, attempting to upgrade your car is not feasible.

A better approach is to sell this car and buy a car with SKS.

    TL ; DR:

In your case, it's not an 'upgrade.'
    It's a 19 year-old car.
Use the metal keys to their advantage.
Make copies and tie-wrap one under the car JIC.
