Sorry if this has been addressed before, but why would I pay $525 for the dealership to install an XM receiver when I could use the $39.99 XpressEZ® played through the AUX jack? The XpressEZ® can also be used elsewhere too! Any of the other units that XM offers are much cheaper than $525. Thanks, Tim
It's just a completely integrated install. You use the touch screen for presets, it's directly wired into the back of the head unit instead of using an FM modulator or cassette adapter so sound quality should be better. It allows you to change channels via the steering wheel controls as well. It's just a cleaner install so there's nothing to clutter up the dash. The aftermarket units work great as well and if the cost is a hinderence I promise not to laugh!! My first XM was the Commander (now discontinued I think) and it was great, but I really wanted the nice clean OEM install. BTW, I only paid about $250 via Coastaletech (it's now available from here via the Priuschat shop as a better options) and installed it myself...it was rewarding and cheaper to do so.
I have the ExpressR - and I don't think there is anyway I'd give that up for the factory installed version - I like being able to see what songs are on other stations (with ExpressR you can see up to 6 other stations) I just have it plugged into the Aux Jack in the center console, and it sits nicely on the cover of cubby hole below the stereo. I can easily stash it in the center console when not needed.
There are clearly advantages to having an aftermarket. You can glance at the song title, lots have scrolling sports scores and stock prices and such. With the OEM you have to switch screens on the MFD to see the songs.
