Or, perhaps, I have gored your ox. If you (generically) benefit from any activity, particularly regarding environmental concerns, that you criticize, then you are contributing to the problem. Solution in your example? Don't use wood. Solution in oil futures/fuel prices/vapors in the air? Don't use the things that create such. Ride a bike, although then you couldn't complain if price of rubber tires go up. Walk, although then you couldn't complain about Nike practices in overseas factories. Well, actually, you could complain, and you have the right to do so; you just shouldn't, in order to be true to yourself.
Your both right (CO2 increase aside). If we are able to tap all the deep water reserves and the Canadian oil sands, supply will still lag the increased emerging market demand. Aside from that, the extraction costs alone will exceed anything historical (inflation adjusted or not). If oil sands crude costs exceed $75 a barrel at the low end before marketing -what will be the futures end up at? Forget about the deepwater reserves, the extraction costs alone and potential for environmental disaster are enormous. I know you know better but I hate when people call it that or think the fuel comes from Triceratops or T-Rex. LOL
This may be completely irrelevant...but it's definitely ironic and has made me laugh. When scrolling through the postings on this thread, I hit a large advertisement entitled "McCainonomics" that stated "McCain's Economic Policies" with a large link and a picture of McCain on it. It's an official advertisement ("Paid for by John McCain" on the bottom.) The advertisement's location smack in the middle of this thread on oil prices makes me laugh.

meanwhile poor folks die or starve or go on food stamps because they cannot afford gas in their 87 fords. I wonder what they might say about stopping that cheaper gasoline-whatever it's source?
I think it obvious that we need to do both things. Drill a lot more sites and find an alternative for later. Nuke plants for electric and possibly electric cars. Just gotta get those pesky battery problems licked. You cannot say stop oil now if you have no alternative. Get more oil going all over the world and in the US also. It is really the only thing we can do. Their are no replacement technologies ready for right now.
