    All the time. Even when it goes in to neutral, the sound gets a bit quieter but is still there.

    Well, $1600 (for a used transmission) on a car that's worth about $2500 doesn't make a lot of sense just to see if it works.

    I hear you and I think you're right. The dealer is just sooooo much more expensive than the independent mechanic.
