Yup there's my problem. My alignment is shot (car doesn't track straight at all) therefore causing abnormal tire wear and the unbearable tire...
oh and I just had the tires rebalanced a few thousand miles ago... this didn't solve the problem.

I think you would be able to tow 1500 lbs but the car would be pretty bogged down. I see civic hybrids at the track towing two bikes all the time...
Yup! as you stated there are the "trailers in a bag" that weigh less than 150 lbs and work great, however I live in downtown and have very limited...
