Hello all, I'm planning to purchase a 2005 Toyota Prius in the next few days. If I purchase a car without the JBL system, is it slotted for spaces to add 9 speakers -- or do JBL cars have custom doors? Hopefully that makes sense. Thanks so much. MJF
Part B to this question is: How good is the stock audio system? Has anyone bought the stock system and added new speakers? Any suggestions on this? Good audio is a big priority for me, but I've found a Prius is really good condition for a good price, but it doesn't have the Premium sound package. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
The Prius is ideally set up for aftermarket stereo systems. A non- JBL Prius is set up for a 6.5" - 7" midrange in the front doors and a small tweeter in the door pillar. Large tweeters will require custom mounting. I built removable fiberglass pods for mine. The rear doors are the same but not tweeter pods. Your do not need 9 speakers for good sound. A high quailty set of midranges and a subwoofer are all that is required. TheOEM system is not very good IMO but swapping out the factory stereo to a high end aftermarket unit makes a big difference. Add a sub and amps and most people would be happy.
F8L, Thanks. That's super helpful. I noticed when I was looking through the forums, there's not a very high regard for the JBL system. I may just keep the stock system and drop in some infinities in the front. That really helps my car shopping. Much appreciated!
No problem! Just find the car that works for you and worry about the stereo later. Not matter which model you buy we can make the stereo better. It's just easier with the JBL system.
