Okay, so my problem appears to be a little different than the similar threads I've read regarding the stereo not functioning. I purchased this '07 Prius a week ago. As soon as I turned on the car (to take it for a test drive) the radio was blaring loud, so I used the steering wheel control to turn the volume down to silent. The rest of the test drive seemed great so I purchased the car.....no warranty. I wasn't really in the mood to listen to music on the way home, so I never bothered turning the volume back up. Anyway, the next day when I turned on the car, needless to say there was no volume coming from the radio. I immediately assumed it was a fuse, so I checked all of those....wasn't it, all fuses check out fine. So to be clear, I cannot achieve audio volume from the radio using either the volume control potentiometer on the head unit itself, nor the volume up/down controls on the steering wheel. Every other control function on the steering wheel works. Same with the Head Unit, all the functions appear to be performing their actions.......there is just NO AUDIO VOLUME!! One thing to note, however, is when I press the tab on the MFD to adjust Speaker Positioning or Bass/Treble levels, those controls do absolutely nothing. They stay in the positions that they are in. In other words, they do not function at all. There are also no beeps when pressing anything on the MFD....whether I have the Beep On/Off tab highlighted or not. I did manage to pair the Bluetooth to my phone, but there are no sounds associated with that either. Also, when I was in the test menu, I did the microphone test, and it did register my voice, so I know that the mic works. It's seems like head unit works fine, but for some reason I am not getting any volume from the speakers. I don't even hear any frequency hum coming from them....just dead silence. Does anyone have an idea as to what is going on w' my radio? LOL, it's starting to drive me mad! Oh, I forgot to mention......though I am not aware of which package I have, I do know that it is not a touring model (no HID/Fog lights). However, I do have the JBL sound w' 9 speakers, but no GPS/Navigation.
So today I disconnected the aux battery for 10 minutes and reconnected it. I took apart the dash, checking all the connections going to the Radio and the MFD. I also disconnected and reconnected the plugs for the amp beneath the passenger seat. No change!! Still no volume :'(
Sorry, don't have a 2007. there is a Mute button on our 2011. Have you seen this thread? It's a 2007 Camry, but try pressing the volume button once or twice, maybe in your haste to quiet the blaring stereo, you pressed the volume button in (Post #9 in thread): 07 Camry stereo...no sound? - Toyota Nation Forum : Toyota Car and Truck Forums
I'll try it, but I doubt that's it. I've pressed that volume toggle on the steering wheel numerous times thinking it might have been jammed or something. Thanks for at least attempting to help. I appreciate it regardless.
Not the button on the steering wheel, I think they are referring to the volume button on the head unit.
For anyone who might run into the same problem as I did, I thought I would update this thread with my findings. I scoured the net looking for solutions and was just about to give up. Then, I stumbled upon a page that broke down the role of the JBL amp and then it all made sense. I'll simply copy/paste what this person discovered about the amp, because his words will be far more concise than my own..... "The amplifier is very much customized for the Prius. It controls the volume of the outputs, as well as the fade/balance. It has a computer network connection to the radio, where digital volume, fade, and balance data is sent to the amplifier. The radio sends two channels (Right and Left) of balanced analog audio to the amplifier, at a fixed level (not changed by the user's volume control). The amplifier performs the crossover function for the front channels, sending lows to the woofer and highs to the tweeter. In addition, there is equalization in the amplifier that reinforces some frequency ranges and lowers others, and the equalization changes depending on volume setting. The JBL amp produces all the beep tones that happen when you press the buttons next to the LCD or on the LCD itself. It sends the beeps to all speakers simultaneously, including to the center speaker, and the beep amplitude seems to be constant, not related to the volume control setting.. Disconnecting the JBL amp outputs will mean you will no longer hear those beeps. The following beeps are not from the JBL amp and happen even with the JBL Amp completely disconnected: Seatbelt, Lock/Unlock with keyfob, Reverse." After I read that, I knew it summarized all the issues I was experiencing.
Oh, in case it's not apparent, I had to replace the JBL amp. Crazy that it just so happened to burn out while I was on my test drive, but that was the issue. Plopped a newer amp in and audio was restored.
Just encountered this same issue with all the same symptoms and was really puzzled by it. Thank you very much for updating the thread. I believe I have the same issue. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
