Which one? O'reilly does not let you rent one

I also checked the list for Advance and Autozone

To shift the car out of the way with engine pulled, @Ragingfit employed dollies under the wheels. They’re kinda pricey though I think.

I’ve thought about doing an engine lift in our garage. First off, a 200 lb engine, while not trivial, is not a lot. If a 200 lb person climbed up into the attic and starting walking around atop the ceiling joists, I doubt anything would break, let alone deflect.

My thought would be to use a relatively cheap hoist, say a come-along suspended from a sturdy section of horizontal steel pipe, securely underslung from the garage ceiling joists (spreading the pipe support loads over at least two joists), in such away that you can “scoot” the come-along (with raised engine) a few feet along the pipe, enough to be beyond the car.

when @Ragingfit pulled his engine he didn’t remove the hood. He even inadvertently forgot to remove exhaust manifold, pulled the engine with it still attached, and it just brushed by the hood. This was a gen 3 fwiw:

Never used these personally but Harbor Freight sells a set of dollies to move the vehicle, provided the ground is smooth and level, these ought to work to skate the car around. Vehicle Dollies - 2 Piece, 1500 Lb. Capacity

Yeah it's a toss-up: $130 USD (for four of the above linked dollies) in order to shift the car out of the way, or some method to shift the lifted engine forward enough to be clear of the front bumper.

I could likely create a frame using 6 2x4s that can roll or even slide on boards. Likely need 8 2x4s to reinforce between the 2 x 4. I can likely come up with something solid though. I can likely do something.

How much do people think a decent backyard mechanic charge to change out engines? I don't think I have shop money for this.

Also I have seen comments on YouTube videos where people succeed and fail. Concerned about failing. Some people also take out the inverter while others do not?

Note, I do not have a garage although likely can afford a temporary car tent if I need to.

Neighbour two houses over from us has one of these:

    And maybe one of these:

It IS sand pounder to acquire such if you''re likely to use only once or twice. I wouldn't doubt you could find them cheap on Craiglist too

If I end up working on the engine myself, any advice how to mitigate risks?

I was able to get a cherry picker engine hoist on long term loan from a friend of a friend.
Not too worried about the cost now on that.
Should I get an engine leveler or are straps good enough?

When I spoke to the person loaning me the lift, he had a good suggestion. get a bunch of zip lock bags and as I pull bolts off, I should label where they come from. Of course take lots of pictures while doing so. Only issue is that when I take pictures, I often don't take them when I really should. He has back problems so cannot physically help me although if the system is being stubborn once put back together, he said he will help me.

last time I was that deep into my own engine building & swapping, I got some old muffin tins out of a secondhand store. I would put fasteners in the cups in sequence, occasionally with a tape note marked with page number or step number from the manuals I was using.

Manila tags with wire twists are also a big help:

You can tag assemblies, wire harness connectors, or wrap the wires around weirdo bolts to ID them individually. Usualy cheap in bulk.

Helped a lot in those days when photos meant film and printing costs.

Keeping removed fasteners arrayed in the sequence they’re removed helps too, chances are they’ll go back on in reverse order.

I have a window ledge adjacent to the engine bay, usually set small fasteners out along it, going left-to-right, with masking tape labels below each cluster.

big items like air box and snorkel I just dump all its associated bolts into the air box.

For bolts holding down a bracket: remove bracket, and screw bolt back in.

I don't have a garage. I have a large yard and driveway. I plan to get plastic sheeting and/or more tarps once I start. I plan to lay down plywood to move the cherry picker back and forth while using a cart to move the engines. Rained a bunch of days so have been unable to get started.

If I get the 2006 running, there is not much reason to keep the 2009 much longer. Beside her batteries, inverter, ABS module, transmission, fuel tank, AC compressor, what should I keep?
Also, when I do the swap, should I swap fuel injectors and should I replace the spark plugs? I am tempted to just save the fuel injectors for now and then just put new plugs in when I swap engines. Fuel injectors were just replaced.

Changing the engine outside on a gravel driveway using plywood to roll the engine hoist around sounds challenging.

My question is how much rust is under the car? The second picture

Also your profile says you are a 56 year old female. Will you have any help?

Be sure everything is solid and safe.

I am not sure how much rut is there. . . . .Is there a concern with that?
Don't have a choice otherwise. I do have some people who can help some.
If the engine was any more than about 200 lbs, it would likely be beyond my limit.
I exercise regularly and am in pretty decent shape for my age otherwise.

Rust makes disassembly more difficult sometimes requiring torches or drilling. Some rusted parts will need replacing. Working under a car means jack stands on solid surfaces for safety.

I would inspect things carefully before tearing into it. Having a second set of eyes look it over would be great.

I don't plan to push myself. I plan on, once I get started, work a couple of fours a day.
Maybe a bit more but don't plan to kill myself.
I can spray down any bolts with PB blaster and wait a day before removing.
I have some old brake rotors which I use to put the brake stands on.
I also have a large metal plate which I use for the shop jack I use.
I will however keep in mind everything you wrote.
