We have been very happy with our Hymotion PHEV conversion. It makes the Prius even more satisfying to drive! So far we seem to be averaging 95 mpg. Sometimes it's possible to maintain 99.9 for several bars of the gas gauge, but not for a whole tank. How's everybody else doing? Put it this way, we're 99.9 for fun, 95 for fuel economy.
lbligh, Calculation from the first fillup on Hymotion was 105MPG. I am on 5 pips since filling up 10/12/2008. Mileage is dropping with colder weather. Since I put in my full grill block the mileage moved back up. I just got the email that my EBH is installed and tested, by my mechanic. I am hoping that I can maintain 100+ in cold weather (below 32f). Chris
My mileage over two tanks has averaged 80 MPG. I don't drive to work everyday like most people. My commutes tend to go past the range of the battery pack. Last night I average 103 MPG for 25 miles on the highway. Unfortunately at 28 miles my pack expired and I drove home with an average of 76. The weather has gotten cold, but I'm still pleased with the performance. I could have made the last tank better by waiting to get gas. I filled up 9 gallons last night for $1.67 per gallon. Filled the tank for $15.25. Had I waited and driven more in town I could have raised the tank average. It will take time to get more results, since I only fill up every 3-4 weeks now. ---Kent
My first week with Hymotion was an average of 85 mpg. After gaining some experience, I am now always above 99.9 mpg on the Prius computer. I have the EBH so that minimizes my warm-up time in the morning. Also my Prius is garaged so it was not that cold to begin with. I give it 2 hours of warm-up (programmable timer) before I leave at 8 am. I think this process helps my average. I also always stay within my Hymotion battery range. I typically have the ability to recharge wherever I am parked during the day, so effectively I can do 60-80 miles per day with Hymotion energy boosting 100% of my driving.
Well, when I plug in on both sides (84 mile round trip commute) - I'm getting about 80mpg. I love it and hope the range may improve a little more as the batteries balance.
The pure EV range is typically 25 miles if you are below 34 mph for the entire consumption of the Hymotion battery. If you are at highway speeds (55 to 60 mph) for the entire time, it will boost your Prius MPG to 140+ for about 40 to 50 miles of range. If you are combined city and highway, then it is typically helping for 30 to 40 miles of range one way. If you have recharging ability at work, then it will be 100% full within 5 hours for your return trip. So realistically, Hymotion could provide a daily electric boosted range of 60 to 80 miles.
Peak, I'm still not seeing more than 28 miles on the pack all freeway at 55-60 mph. My last two bars drop and the pack light turns off about 28 miles distance. I'm giving it another week on the possibility of balancing the batteries, but then will need to call Hymotion for a data logger in case my pack has issues.
In my experience the final bar is only good for about 0.5 to 1.0 miles. The first bar is typically good for 3 miles. The 6 bars in the middle are fairly constant at 5.5 to 5.8 miles (each bar) at 55-60 mph. My highway range is typically at 40 to 41 miles if I save 100% of the battery for only highway miles. Pure EV is about 22.5 miles to 24 miles if there are no stoplights and mostly flat terrain. You state that your highway range is 28 miles. What about your pure EV range at 30 to 32 mph?
I performed an all highway test today. Speed was between 60 to 64 MPH. I was able to get 29.7 miles before the Hymotion was depleted. The car was not warmed by block heater outside temperature was 45 degrees. This trip was more spur of the moment, but on planned trips I try to plug in at least 2-3 hours before leaving. This was the longest trip on Hymotion I have been able to substain. Unfortunately the trip was 56 miles and my overall average was 65 MPG. I bought a Kill a Watt meter and the Hymotion is requiring 5 KW to recharge. That part seems normal. ---Kent
I'll have to test this out, but may be difficult with winter weather. I do have a block heater and can start EV, but not sure if it will last the duration of the pack.
When I do a pure EV test, I wait until late evening when traffic is light. I leave my garage with the Hymotion switch in the off position. Drive in normal Prius mode to your flat testing area, this gives the engine enough time to warm-up. Once you are at 30 mph and all clear, reset the odometer to zero, flip on the Hymotion battery and start your test. If your engine is warm then it should slide directly into EV mode.
