When we first moved back to the US in 2014, we bought two Prii. I Got one to help keep them running longer.it's a gamble. Will the charger extend the life of two batteries long enough to pay for itself? Normally, it would be likely, but there's always the chance of some failure other than the modules getting out of balance. We took the chance, but I don't really have a way to know if we came out ahead.

Hi Jerry, New question for you. I have discovered the 2nd Gen prius doesn't have a EGR Cooler. My wifes prius is running a bit rough and was going to R and R the intake manifold gasket, throttle body gasket,Vaper hose #1, and #2. (dried out and cracked)

I talked to Mendel and don't plan on disconnecting the throttle body coolant hoses. while its off it is getting a new PCV valve even though I did it with Spark plugs at 75K miles. I'll check the plugs but....it justs idles rougher than my Prius. I also plan on running a bottle of Cat cleaner through the tank. Anything else you recommend?

I'd recommend going ahead with disconnecting the throttle body hoses so it'll be easier to clean the TB while you're at it. If it needs cleaning and it probably does.

While you're in there, check the ignition coils. As they begin to fail, they will lead to rough running.

OK. WILL DO How do I check them? With an Ohm meter to measure the resistance. Or just visual inspect for build up. It is starting to run a bit rough. Hence the reason for this project.

Use an ohm meter across the two outside pins on the coils. If it's down around 8 ohms or under, it's bad. It should be about 12 ohms. In between and it's probably on the way out.

If you get an open reading, it may be because you're trying to read resistance through a coil rather than a resister. Some digital meters will be fooled by the inductance of the coil.

Also, if the coil is actually bad (as in not firing well enough for ignition) you'll get a misfire code and it will run very rough.

OK. They are not failed but could be heading south. If I go ahead and dive in there again. I will check all of them for sure. It is not running to rough. yet Just not perfect. I will Ohm them next time I am in there for sure. Thanks
