I agree, the biggest issue here was the brand of tire bought, not the type. The Michelin ES/AS tires are great to drive on, and get great MPG too.
The primary purpose of such filters is to clean your wallet. Unless you drive in dusty conditions, the OE filter can easily last 50,000 miles or more.
