Separate names with a comma.
The shift knob unscrews, but there is absolutely no reason to remove it. The knob passes thru the shifter opening easily.
I believe someone posted that they were designed to reduce the turbulence otherwise created by the wheel spokes. I suspect this effect is minimal...
