Mine is flush with the bodywork but there is a good 1/4" gap at the front edge of the hood showing the rubber seal.
No belts on the Gen 4, sounds like you may have an air leak somewhere on the inlet side, one of the rubber tubes maybe ?

I can't see any way of disabling the gradual dimming without turning the, "lights on as you approach" option off altogether. You'll probably need...
Try your dipstick in the wife's car and vice versa, that should tell you if it's the stick or the tube.
