My son had a Gen 2 and now has a Prius V (Gen 3). I know my Gen 4 is smoother but do not remember about Gen 2 -> Gen 3.

Not what you asked but the 4th Gen is definitely smoother. Toyota learned a lot in 20 years of Hybrid design.
