if it's actually pitted this would be a good case to use an after market oil filter with a wide gasket instead of the Denso filter with it's rather small diamater O-ring. Most after market oil filters have a flat cut gasket almost 1/4" wide. Some carefull measuring of the diamater of the inner part of the flange without pitting will tell you how big a gasket you can run. If it's larger than the outer diamater of the O-ring you could still probably use the Denso/Toyota filter if you want.

The gloves were in fact removed after the surface was wiped clean, for this very purpose.

It's not that bad at all... You can BARELY notice the change in the feel of the metal as you move around. I really, really, doubt it will tear the oil filter O-ring and cause a slow leak.

I'll probably end up sticking with the K&N filter, as one of the things I like about it, is you can remove it with a socket, as it has a hex nut shaped piece of metal welded onto the bottom of it.

Speaking of oil filters, on sportbikes, all you need do is a good hand tightening of the oil filter (the idea being quick oil changes after seriously "pushing" the engines). Most racers do this, and there's rarely been instances where they come off. How tight do you all go? I usually stick with the standard "hand tighten, then 3/4 turn" tool philosophy...

(oddly enough, the Prius oil filter is about the same size as my bike oil filter...)

I never go more than 1/2 to 3/4 turn after the gasket/o-ring touches on anything I own. In 25 years I have *never* had a problem.

Correction: once I had a problem. I used to store oil filters in unheated spaces, thinking they didn't need to be kept in a climate-controlled area. In '85 or '86 there was an unusually cold winter and I changed the oil in my Ford truck.

I started the truck, and noticed the oil pressure gauge was pulsing. I looked between the gap of the opened hood and the cowl, and noticed oil spraying all over the place.

The cold oil filter gasket had ripped when I put the oil filter on. Fortunately, I had the old oil filter sitting on the used oil barrel to drain, and it was still quite warm. I took the gasket off the old filter, put it on the new filter, and got more oil out of the garage to fill up the sump.

3 qts of oil all over the motor made one hell of a mess.

Otherwise, with that lesson learned, I've never had a problem.
