I drive all over LA (around 2700 miles a month) and have been able to keep it between 51-54 mpg. About 80% of my driving is freeway. Finding the best route can make a huge difference...as can the A/C or extra passengers. Let me know, maybe we can find a better route for you.
waaaay too much decline for changes in gas formulation. i vote for extra weight and environment. simply doing what Jim Croce (Bad Bad Leroy Brown and Bob Seger (Against the Wind) warned about.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(DaveinOlyWA @ Jul 6 2006, 08:45 PM) </div> I've had bad gas that cut my mpg by way more, over 10 mpg. It has happened to me twice in 20k miles. The second time it even happened at my regular station and I quickly switched to another. That station is now closed for new tanks, so maybe that had something to do with it. Each time it happened I was able to get back some of the loss with an octane booster.
i have only not gotten gas at my regular station three times. only once in the past 16 months (was visiting in Port Orchard and @ 2.779 a gallon, that was over 20 cpg cheaper than Olympia!!)
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(mssmith95 @ Jul 6 2006, 04:06 PM) </div> I drive from Chatsworth to Azusa, past Pasadena, near Irwindale over the 118 and 210 freeways. A couple of moderate mountain ranges. I do drive as fast as traffic will allow. Sometimes 0 sometimes 80+. I use cruise control and A/C set about 76. I'm not complaining at all. My Subaru gets 25-27 on the same drive. I know the I5 is slightly shorter, but mure trafficky.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(tomdeimos @ Jul 6 2006, 05:51 PM) </div> although bad gas is an obvious "change in formulation". that would not be what i am referring to. E10 might reduce your results 1-2 mpgs at the most.
Definitely not a hyper miler here, but I've been getting crappy mileage my last 2 tanks also (crappy = less than 49mpg). Now I realize it may have to do with this new gasoline formulation, as neither the weather nor my driving habits have changed at all in the last few weeks. I was so disappointed with the readings on my most recent tank that just a short while ago, 188 miles into the tank, I got gas again so I could have a "do-over" and start fresh. No matter what I did, I couldn't get it above 46.8, and I've been getting 49-51mpg tanks for the last 2 months straight, and very easily I might add. 20 miles into said current tank I'm just above 55mpg and will be pleased if it can stay somewhere in the 50's for the remainder.

And bad gas does relate maybe, since the water sitting in gas station tanks may be a bit high, and contaminates the fuel if they don't get the water out first.
Last year when I just got my car (July 15th) I was getting 58-60 tanks, this summer I am struggling to get it to 56. My last tank finished at 55.2, this tank 432 miles I am at 54.2. I am pissed off. Although I do admit I do drive a bit faster (70mph) than last year (60-65mph). Got to run to check my tire pressure...

wouldnt surprise me to find out oil companies have chemically watered down the gasoline as a better alternative to raising prices any higher than they have to. lets face it, most havent a clue what kind of mileage they are getting in the regular vehicles anyway.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Rancid13 @ Jul 7 2006, 05:43 PM) </div> my server crashed and I lost te penguins. I have to look around the web, I've seen it on other forums, but I can't locate it any more. It's easy to find the one with the penguins only but I can't find the one I made with the "Hybrid Synergy Drive" sign. I have seen it on DarwinsAwards but it's gone. So, if you come across it let me know.
Hi DaveinOlyWa, Well, they have raised the price too! Refilled at $3.18 yesterday. I heard one station was at $3.30 this morning from a guy at work. Both prices for regular.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(DaveinOlyWA @ Jul 7 2006, 07:35 PM) </div> I know. I am pissed.
Around here, in the NE section of the country (lovely and expensive Long Island, NY) the gas is a piece of crap, my last 2 tanks, @ 3.20 gl cheapest in the area, renders no more than 46 mpg in the MFD, and that really sucks..... and I havent changed my driving habits than some a/c on when reaches above 76 deg. Positively gas formulation and temperature.
