You might consider a worm bin. Some people put them inside their house... I have mine on the front porch. The worms don't eat nearly enough to handle a pair of (mostly raw) vegans, but they do help out. They could work with a 'standard' family, I'm told.

I have worms! I tried to upload a picture, but my bluetooth file transfer isn't working.
I have it in the corner of the dining room, they never smell unless I've got the lid off and then it smells like the rainforest. It started out as a way to create good compost for my garden and now they are my lil' pets. I take great joy in making sure their little mansion ( four stories of worms) is happy and cozy.

The composter I have is supposed to allow the worms to work up through new layers of fresh food, leaving nice bins full of created compost but stray worms kept going down instead of up so I just gave up and feed them in all layers. The idea that any of my guys were not well fed was just to much! :)

My sister and my BIL have a worm composter. They are known to the local kids as the worm couple. Is it much work and maintainence? I'm really a lazy person.

I still think outdoors is the way to go, provided you have the space for it. The worms are far more active in the summer, and in winter they can burrow as deep as they want to stay warm. I'd worry about leaving them on the porch this time of year.

I'm trying to convince the wife to let me keep some rabbits to compost the green waste even faster, and give us excellent compost year-round, but she's not going for it. Maybe I shouldn't have suggested chickens first, hoping she'd agree to rabbits as a compromise. :D
