It just seems funny they would mount it right in line with the accessory case.
If it was not mounted on the engine there would be no need for flex hoses if it is totally electric.
Can anyone find a break down drawing of the that part of the engine. It could have a one way clutch for engine power or elec power.

This link is a wealth of information! Pages 5 and 6 says 'AC compressor ( with inverter ) and the .pdf attached shows
201 VDC going to the compressor. I see only 2 big wires at the compressor connector near the engine.
I guess it's wishful thinking that they made this a dual driven compressor. An engine driven compressor is so efficient.

This link is a keeper! Serious info the owner's manual would never give you. Select Gen3 and save it.

Thanks for posting, I would think that Toyota left the compressor where it used to be because it is cheaper that way. No other reason. Cost too much to re-tool.

    PDF file no good.

Plus it would have alot more vibration if chassis mounted. The engine sinks the vibration.

The compressor is underneath the electric water pump in this video. There's no belt nor gears, so it doesn't need a clutch. It's basically the same compressor that's in the Volt, which is all electric, too. It may even be made by the same company.

It's not ACDelco, it's made by a Japanese company.

They're made by Denso. Here's a pic of the Gen III compressor from an eBay ad.

It'll probably wind up being the norm with more hybrid and electric cars coming down the road. It's how you're still going to have A/C running with the ICE not running. Maybe it'll be used on cars with start/stop engines, too.

A lot of guys that drag race are switching over to electric power steering units to free up hp. In my case my 95 SOHC Neon picked up an honest 3 mpg at 55 mph when the power steering was removed and nearly 3/4 of a second in the 1/4 mile...about 9 hp! This big gain makes me wonder if there was a problem with the PS pump that I did not know about. It is a pain when parking but love the open road feel of it. Thinking of sticking a Prius electric pump on it. While I am at it, when I turn on my A/C it feels like I suddenly got another car hitched to mine...I'll have to see about getting an electric compressor too.

Just to nitpik,, the AC compressor is fed 201 VDC straight from the big battery.
Look at it. Only two big wires go into it.
Internally it has its own inverter and runs its motor on 3 phase AC,,,, if that link that I posted above is to be believed.

Keep in mind all power in a car comes from fuel burn. Engine driven AC compressors are efficient, no electrical conversion/transmission loses. Cars that shut off their engines a lot need electric AC compressors.
Power steering is using power only when you are asking for steering movement, so losing an engine driven pump there is a great idea.
