Here's a shocker: My dealer was going to change the oil at 5000 mi. They now say that Toyota recommends the interval to be 10,000 mi. So, I won't be changing my original oil for 12 mo/10000 miles.
With the synthetic oil that you have to use, changing oil more frequently is too expensive (and not needed, according to Toyota).

    That's just my opinion (and Toyota's :D).

On my 2000 4Runner I changed the oil at 1,000 and every 5,000 after that. I sold the SUV after 10 years with 305,000 miles. It never burned oil and it never leaked oil or transmission fluid.

I contribute the long life of the engine to flushing the break in particles at 1,000 miles and regular oil changes after that. I never used special oil over the 10 years. In the Prius I do not have a choice. It always gets synthetic oil.

I'm just saying maybe for once we can trust Toyota. Maybe they know more about their oils and motors then we do.
