    Both Harvey and Irma will be counted as major. Made how much worse by less than complete evacuations, others can figure out.

    What has not happened yet is really strong eyewall action in Miami and other east FL coast population centers.

    Once again, luck is not a business plan.

    Two of those cranes careened. I expect louder voices to lower them prior to next likely storm.

    OTOH, from a China perspective, what big city has only 24 construction cranes?

    less than 10 years ago, you could have purchased a miami highrise from a squatter for pennies on the dollar.

    I really don't know what happens in Chinese coastal cities when big winds come. But a large crane company, Zoomlion, installed one crane in forest for canopy research and it's a great ride.

    In Miami, if some low houses are flooded beyond repair, sites may become available for more tall buildings to dare the sky.

    Skyscrapers. Sky scrapes back!

    Bump that count up to three toppled cranes:

    This story mentions that it takes a couple weeks to take down a crane, and few firms are qualified to do it. So there isn't time to take them down with current designs and resources.

    Changes will need to happen. I suspect that for Cat 5 Hurricane risk areas, that likely means upgrading the ability of the cranes to withstand the winds.

    Gas prices at the pump have gone up £0.02/liter already. I think their motto is 'anticipate the worst and count the profit when it turns out better than we said it would.'

    That's the price of gas, not the tragedies suffered by so many in the Caribbean and Southern States.

    Edit: Sorry, I butted in thinking I was at the end of a thread, but was only responding to Bob from last Wednesday. Bows head in shame!

    I enjoy the irony of moving to Florida (or the South) for the climate ... and air conditioning. In contrast, my wife enjoys going to Florida which I'm not so enthused.

    I stayed for a week at the Embassy Suites Ft Lauderdale one May and (as a Brit) welcomed the Aircon. My 'Merican buddy drove us around the east coast tourist spots, but almost froze when I dialled the car's Aircon down to 20°C/68°F. Having Served in the Gulf for 2 years and about 5 more in the tropics, I can adapt to heat, but my wife prefers the colder climes. She'd take vacations in the Arctic if she could.

    Thank you for your service. I spent a year on Okinawa and it had insufferable heat, insufferable heat, insufferable heat, and suffering heat. Fortunately not as dusty as Oklahoma.
    There are Arctic cruises although frightfully expensive. I suspect there are shorter tours around the perimeter of the Atlantic, Arctic shores without having to take either one of the passages.

    Reduces Irma to $50 billions. The most damaged area gets a large fraction of revenue from tourism; such losses will stretch into future and I don’t think they can be estimated now. Another, high-flying estimate for Irma, 300 billions is here:

    For Irma and Leeward Island to Cuba, no comprehensive estimate appears to exist yet. Hoping it will be less than Irma in Florida.


    For comparison, Hurricane Katrina in 2005 had total cost in range of 100 to 150 billions, with one ‘high-flyer’ estimate of 250. After so long it is hard to understand why that range remains so wide. Perhaps it is a matter of defining losses.
