Thanks, my gulf was mainly Gulf of Aden now the Yemen tho did some time in PG and Singapore Yes my wife has cruised the Baltic and Norway's west coast already and is currently eyeing those venturing closer to the top of the world. Shouldn't complain, she let me take her round the Caribbean twice with Celebrity Cruises.
I found this to be somewhat misleading, nearly clickbaity: Hurricanes hammer these US states most often - CNN Text does reveal that coastline lengths modify the story a lot. Does not quite get to revealing that Florida landfalls per mile are between New York and Maryland, and thus quite far down the list. But even that is not the most sensible measure. It could readily calculated from HURDAT. Actually has been by Columbia University CIESIN, although one can dispute whether wind speeds squared or cubed are the better measure. Plus a few other details. Hurricane wind power dissipation per length of coastline, from Canada to Mexico.since 1851. I think it is very worthwhile knowledge. May have actually linked to the CIESIN map before. My point is that sensible metrics are not necessarily harder to understand than 'gee whiz'.
Having (ex-)in-laws in Nova Scotia, I was also disappointed to see it stop at the U.S. borders. Halifax gets hit too.
coastline@224. This may not be a topic we ought to enter. Coastline measurement depends greatly on scale of measurement. It is a fractal thing. Florida could have much more than 8000 miles if one wanted to look closely enough. For my divisors I took coastline lengths from a wiki page (you won't be surprised) that goes back to some sort of geodetic surveys. Most we can hope for is that those are done consistently. I believe that they are.
For those keeping score at home, N Atl 2017 hurricane season is now 11 named storms 6 hurricanes 3 major hurricanes and we are just past halftime.
We are flying out in the middle of October to see the NE's highly publicized fall colors. I hope there are still a few leaves left....
have a great trip! we have been talking about the northwest next year. and watch the weather, we seem to be getting an early fall in so. new england. it was a really dry late summer here, and now a heat wave. (80's) not sure about nh, vt and me. maybe other members will chime in.
Currently, Jose is looking like a 'miss', Lee may not build to hurricane strength, 15/Maria is on a troubling track for Puerto Rico and neighbors. Modeled tracks can change a lot.
my father wants to know if he should get a ticket out before maria. i said to buy a refundable ticket for two days before forecasted arrival.
Too soon for Florida to focus on Maria. Deal with current situation. Houston is spraying moderate mosquito toxins: Houston launches all-out assault to combat mosquitoes in wake of Harvey - CBS News Which seems very sensible. Large events merit prompt responses. In a week or two, 'chemtrails' will come to Florida. In both states, wide human exposure to poopy-water also merits attention.
