So was my oceanography professor (Chip Johnson, U.S. Navy retired oceanographer and former deputy superintendent of the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington). He graduated the University of Washington and enlisted in the Navy on graduation day. He is a great guy with a lot of passion for his current and past work and he really opened my eyes to how much of an impact the armed forces have on the sciences.
